You've heard the allegations by now, and you probably have listened to the excruciatingly awkward NPR interview if you care at all about Bill Cosby. The numerous sexual assault accusations against the comedy giant have put a pall over his career and in the minds of those who essentially grew up with the man.
HuffPost Live hosted a roundtable Monday to talk about Cosby and the affect this latest saga has had on his fans. Those who grew up loving Cosby almost feel guilty for his transgressions, blogger Stacia L. Brown said.
"Everyone who has grown up with Bill Cosby, as everyone's been saying so far, has known about [the allegations] since 2005 or noticed that this occurred in 2005, but we all keep suppressing it to continue to support him because he's been suppressing it," Brown, who wrote a blog about this for The Guardian, told host Alyona Minkovski. "So this entire time, just as he's been silent on these things involving it, it makes us complicit. We're disappointed in ourselves when these thing re-emerge."
Also joining the discussion was Scott Simon, the NPR host who conducted that interview and asked Cosby point-blank to respond to the claims (he didn't). Simon said that this part of Cosby's life will hang over the rest of his career.
"I did overhear Stacia say that this is going to be in the first line of his biography and obituary, and I think that's true," Simon said. "But yes, when charges are particularly ... well, I'll use the word — I think you have to — of this rapacious nature, I think you have to raise those questions."
