Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton grew up in Alpine, Ark., a small town with a population of 110. Though he had a modest upbringing, Thornton tells "Oprah's Master Class" his childhood was very eclectic thanks to his parents.
"My mom is a psychic," the actor, director, screenwriter and musician says in the above video. "It wasn't like she had a store downtown with a crystal ball sign out front or anything like that. People would come to the house and she did readings for people at one point."
While his mother was of Italian and Native American descent, the "Fargo" actor says his father was a red-blooded Irish-American. "So I was raised with sports and hard work and biscuits and gravy on one side, and on the other side, books and crystals and burial mounds and spirits and all that kind of thing," Thornton says. "That's how people like me turn out the way they do. It's like all those mixtures, you know?"
Though he says that diverse upbringing made him the man he is today, Thornton jokes that having a clairvoyant mom didn't pan out well for a mischievous kid.
"When your mom's psychic, it's not easy to sneak in the house drunk at night," he laughs. "I'll guarantee you that."
