A 67-year-old man described as a "pillar" of the South Side Chicago community where he lived was fatally shot Tuesday morning while he stood at a CTA bus stop.
Billy Sergent was hit in the chest and buttocks about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 6000 block of South King Drive in Washington Park -- not far from where he lived, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He was pronounced dead about a half hour later at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
A person of interest was in custody, but no charges were filed in the shooting as of Tuesday afternoon, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Neighbor Sennie Barnes told DNAinfo Chicago Sergent was "a really nice man" she wouldn't have minded being married to if she didn't already have a husband.
Another woman who identified herself as Sergent's former landlord said, "It's as if I've lost family, my brother."
The weekend prior to Sergent's shooting death, one man was killed and at least nine other people were wounded by gun violence citywide in Chicago. Also killed was 19-year-old Miguel Delgado, who was gunned down in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue about 2:20 a.m. Saturday in Wicker Park.
