Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin will miss an extended period of playing time due to a suspected hand fracture after reportedly striking someone from the team's equipment staff, according to ESPN's Michael Eaves.
Eaves reports that the incident between Griffin and the staffer happened when the team was playing in Toronto.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, ESPN's Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne had reported that Griffin would be out for "a matter of weeks" due to his hand injury, which was reported as occurring at an "undisclosed team-related incident." Now you can understand why they didn't disclose it.
The Clippers have yet to comment on the reported incident, although according to Clippers.com reporter Rowan Kavner, head coach Doc Rivers said that a statement will be issued before Tuesday night’s game. The Huffington Post has reached out to the Clippers for comment.
The 26-year-old Griffin hasn't played since Dec. 26 while trying to recover from a torn quadriceps muscle. With this new, and apparently unnecessary, off-the-court injury, Griffin will continue to be out of the lineup.
Update -- 4:05 p.m.:
The Los Angeles Clippers announced Tuesday afternoon that Blake Griffin did fracture a bone in his right hand while "throwing a punch" on January 23. Griffin had x-rays taken of his hand and had surgery on Tuesday morning.
