Blue Whale Plays With Dolphin Pod Off Southern California Coast (VIDEO)

WATCH: The Human Race Can Learn Something From This Whale-Dolphin Friendship

There are few things we love as much as interspecies love fests.

This one is extra special.

That's because it involves the rare sighting of a beautiful, endangered animal AND an even more uncommon display of friendship in the wild.

Whale watchers taking a tour with Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari off Dana Point, Calif., had the privilege of seeing a pod of bottlenose dolphins catching a ride with a blue whale.

Captain Dave Anderson described the dolphins' actions as "surfing."

"This kind of a free ride is possible for these dolphins by positioning themselves in front of this rare and endangered whale and riding the pressure wave created by the force of this giant moving through the water," he wrote along with a video posted to YouTube last week.

According to Anderson, whales and dolphins are not known to interact socially, so the show of cooperation was a moment to remember.

Though it is out of the ordinary, this isn't the first time we've seen whales and dolphins getting along. Earlier this year, a group of sperm whales temporarily adopted and traveled with a dolphin that had a spinal deformation.
