Bobby Jindal Not Endorsing David Vitter In Reelection Fight

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is withholding support from his home-state senator and fellow Republican David Vitter in Vitter's reelection fight against Democratic U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, according to New Orleans-based station WDSU.

"Voters can make up their own minds," said Jindal, adding that he maintains a policy of not wading into federal races. But that's not entirely true, the local outlet reports:

Jindal was a special guest at a 2008 fundraiser for Baton Rouge Rep. Bill Cassidy's campaign.

The governor also endorsed Woody Jenkins in his failed bid for Congress.

Jindal spokeswoman Melissa Sellers told CNN that her boss may offer an official declaration of support for Vitter in the future, but for now plans to remain on the sidelines.

Earlier this summer, Jindal opted against endorsing Vitter in his campaign to overcome a last-minute primary challenge from former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Chet Traylor.

Though he was at the center of a jaw-dropping sex scandal several years ago, Vitter has managed to bounce back from the controversy quite well. According to the latest poll numbers out on the Louisiana Senate race, the GOP incumbent maintains a comfortable double-digit lead over his Democratic challenger.
