Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) said Sunday that Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe had "disqualified himself" for governor, and urged Democrats to drop McAuliffe as their nominee.
Speaking during a press conference at the National Governors Association meeting in Milwaukee, Wis., Jindal pointed to reports that the electric car company co-founded by McAuliffe is being investigated by the Securities & Exchange Commission for soliciting foreign investors. McAuliffe has denied any prior knowledge of the investigation, and said he did not seek special favors.
"The bottom line is Terry McAuliffe has disqualified himself to be the governor of Virginia," Jindal said. "This scandal is just the final nail in the coffin."
According to Politico, Jindal called on Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, the chair of the Democratic Governors Association, to find a new candidate for the Democratic nomination in Virginia.
“As the governor of Louisiana, this scam’s so bad it would even embarrass politicians in Louisiana,” Jindal said. “This is beyond the pale.”
During the press conference, Jindal unveiled a new television ad in support of Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli. The spot attacks McAuliffe on the SEC investigation, as well as his record on energy.
"Terry McAuliffe, just can’t trust him,” reads the narrator.
“It’s not often that I thank my Democratic counterparts, but I do want to thank them for nominating Terry,” Jindal said, according to the Washington Post.
Jindal, who chairs the Republican Governors Association, is a strong supporter of Cuccinelli. In May, the Louisiana governor campaigned on behalf of Cuccinelli, praising the tea party favorite's "convictions."
