After being hospitalized by a 100-mph crash while testing his Sprint Cup car at Road Atlanta at midweek it seemed unlikely that NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski would even get behind the wheel at Pocono Raceway on Sunday.
Yet, the 27-year-old driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite car was behind the wheel when the race began, despite having badly injured his ankle in the wreck. And if driving 500 miles with a broken ankle wasn't impressive enough, Keselowski won the race.
After the triumph, Keselowski revealed that he drew inspiration from a relative in the Navy Seals, who shared with him some of the emotions and details of this week's tragic events in Afghanistan, where 30 American service members were killed when their helicopter was shot down. Compared to the hellish ordeal faced by the comrades and families of the fallen soldiers, Keselowski felt that it wasn't too tall an order to race, and win, despite his injury.
If Keselowski can continue to race through pain then his triumph at Pocono Raceway keeps him in the mix to secure a wild card berth to the Chase.
