Just Pay the Kid

Never, I mean never, underestimate the good feeling you get from your child doing something you want them to do. This Mother's Day, my husband and 6 and 8-year-old sons made dinner, which involved fruit salad for dessert. My kids have gone through phases of eating everything, eating nothing, eating only plain pasta and bread... you name it. Now I loved the hand-made cards, loved the table set outside and the glass of champagne surreptitiously put into my hand when I reached out for something else. What did I love the most? The sight of my two chums giggling at the table with mouths full of BLUEBERRIES. I don't think either of them have ever had a blueberry in their lives. They didn't scream "Eeeww, gross." They didn't whine. They didn't complain. They ate those berries and smiled. My Mother's Day was complete.

In this week's Coffee Shop Confessions, a mom bribes her son to get a haircut for Mother's Day. I have absolutely no problem with that whatsoever. If my husband had had to pay the boys to eat blueberries, that would have been fine, too.
