No. No, no, no, no, no. Uh-uh. Absolutely not.
I understand the parents of job seeking kids. I really do. They've vowed to be more connected to their children than their own parents were. They raised their children at a time when it felt irresponsible to just let them sink or swim on their own -- the world was more complicated, stakes were higher, competition was more intense. Or, at least it seemed that way.
And it feels nice that the result is a generation of 20-somethings who are closer to their parents than any generation in history.
But please. STAY AWAY from their job interviews.
Jobs are the dividing line between grown and not, between independent and almost, between standing on your own two feet and wobbling. You wouldn't come along on their wedding night, would you? Some things they just have to do themselves. (True, some parents have been known to tag along on the honeymoon, but you know what you think of them, right? Well that's what you'd look like to the rest of us sitting in the HR office next to your nervous child. )
So give them advice on their resume. Help them pick out their outfit. Even run a mock interview session or two.
But don't set foot in the actual office. That is a step way too far.
