Bristol Palin announced her engagement to Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer on Saturday.

The daughter of former vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin shared the news in an Instagram post, saying, "Truly the luckiest girl in the world, cannot wait to marry this man!!!!!"

Palin offered more details about the engagement and her new fiance in a blog post on Saturday.

"Dakota came to Alaska to film Amazing America with my mom last year. He met Tripp during that time, and I’ve seen him in a few places where our paths have crossed since," she wrote, referring to her young son. "He’s visited us in Alaska, and I’ve visited his wonderful family in Kentucky. He’s wonderful with Tripp and I’m so proud to be marrying him."

President Barack Obama awarded Meyer the Medal of Honor, America's highest military accolade, in 2011 for his courageous service in Afghanistan. Meyer defied orders and went into a Taliban ambush, where he saved a number of Afghan lives and recovered bodies of U.S. troops.

In 2013, Meyer said on Twitter that he was interested in running for Congress.
