UK Chefs, Farmers Salvage 'Wonky' Veggies, Cook Up Stew For 5,000

Instead of letting "wonky" carrots and cauliflower go to waste, a group of British charities and farmers whipped up a vegetable stew to feed 5,000 people in Trafalgar Square, BBC reports.

"Throwing away food is a big and serious topic at the moment. It's disgraceful," Valentine Warner, a chef involved in the initiative, told the news outlet. "It's total disrespect for mother nature."

The event aimed to raise awareness about the growing issue of food waste. The vegetables used for the meal came from supermarkets that had discarded the greens that were in perfect condition for consumption, but were just a bit misshapen.

"Supermarkets taught people not to want those things," Warner said. "We would never have wasted it not so far back."
