If Britney Spears can make it through 2007, then everyone should stop writing fake stories about her, OK?

The pop star made her triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage last month almost a decade after her “Gimme More” fumble at the ceremony in 2007.

It might not have been Britney-with-a-Burmese-python levels of insanity, but she made it through the performance unscathed, minus rapper G-Eazy’s attempt to make out with her on live television.

Apparently, we can’t just celebrate how far Britney’s come without trying to tear her down again, because, according to TMZ, In Touch magazine is intent on publishing a story about the singer’s “erratic” behavior at the award show. The tabloid claims to have a source that caught Brit “talking and laughing to herself and using a British accent.”

Oh, you mean the voice she randomly used throughout the “Britney Jean” era? Go call the go-va-nah!

TMZ reports that Spears’s legal team has fired back with a letter threatening to sue In Touch as the story is “utterly false, highly defamatory and completely offensive to Ms. Spears.” The Huffington Post has reached out to both Spears’ representatives and In Touch for a comment and will update the post accordingly.

You tell ‘em, Brit.
