The giraffes at Brookfield Zoo took advantage of warmer spring-like temperatures on Monday and made their outdoor debut of the year, an annual rite of spring at the Chicago-area zoo.

Among the herd this year, making his outdoor debut, was Dave, a 5-month-old calf born last November to Arnieta, a 5-year-old reticulated giraffe at the zoo. Dave is the 58th giraffe born at the zoo.

According to the zoo, because the giraffes are native to northeast Kenya, the outdoor temperature needs to be a minimum of 45-50 degrees in order to be comfortable for them to stretch their legs and traipse about.
