Surface Of Brooklyn Bridge Park Hits 171 Degrees

Tuesday's temperature may have peaked at 102 degrees, but the same can't be said for the city's parks.

Geoffrey Croft, a member of NYC Park Advocates Inc, went about New York to test the temperatures in a number of the city's parks. Over a dozen reached 170 degrees or hotter, a reading higher than any he's seen in the past three years.

Brooklyn Bridge Park hit a city-wide high of 171 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Temperatures on black rubber playground safety surfacing was recorded at over 160 degrees," he told Gothamist.

He shared some handy tips on how to avoid burns from the radiated heat of park surfaces':

  • Avoid playgrounds with black safety surfacing, unless they have complete shade coverage.
  • Avoid metal surfaces like slides.
  • Avoid artificial turf fields in the sun.
  • Drink lots of liquids.
  • Use spray showers, pools and water features.
  • Seek shade.
  • Participate in non-strenuous activities
.

Another tip? Don't go anywhere there isn't air conditioning.
