Bryan Craig, Rich Central High School Basketball Coach, Fired Over Controversial Sex Book

High School Coach Fired Over Racy Sex Book

A suburban Chicago high school guidance counselor and former girls' basketball coach has been fired over a sexually explicit self-help book he wrote.

Rich Central High School Superintendent Donna Simpson Leak initially said Craig “has his constitutional right to free speech," but later that day he was suspended, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. On Tuesday, the school board voted unanimously to terminate the tenured faculty member's employment at a special meeting in Richton Park, Ill.

The release of Craig's book, "It's Her Fault," which includes pick-up advice, categorizations of women's body types and other sexually explicit material, upset parents and community members earlier this month, and he was placed on leave.

"Even though I feel I’m beyond the highest caliber of men, I still have a weakness for cleavage," Craig writes in one passage, according to Patch.

Craig, an employee of the school since 2004, told ABC Chicago he "assumed" the board would take action following his suspension, and in a statement board president Betty Owens said Craig's book "fell far short of our expectations" of conduct after the board handed down their decision.

Craig is disputing his termination, and attorney Stephen Richards told CBS Chicago he believes "Mr. Craig was wronged" and legal action could be pending.

"We regret the board's decision," Richards told CBS. "It's a clear violation of Mr. Craig's First Amendment rights."
