Now that the "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" is actually happening, Vince Gilligan shared some details about the upcoming series in a new cover story for The Hollywood Reporter. Gilligan revealed the tantalizing possibility that we may not have seen the last of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.
THR reports that Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have expressed interest in appearing on the Bob Odenkirk-fronted prequel, and Gilligan seems willing to make that happen. "Personally, I'd have a hard time resisting putting all these guys in for a cameo or two every now and then," he said.
Gilligan also revealed that "Better Call Saul" was originally going to be a half-hour sitcom before he and showrunner Peter Gould found that they weren't as comfortable in that format.
"We're both one-hour drama guys," Gilligan said about himself and Gould. "So we figured, 'Why not shoot Saul in the same way?' Let's shoot it in Albuquerque, let's get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let's do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating."
"Better Call Saul" is tentatively slated to premiere on AMC between August and October of 2014. Gilligan will be heavily involved for at least the first season. Looking back on his experience working on "The Lone Gunmen," a spinoff of "The X-Files" that aired for only 13 episodes back in 2001, makes him even more determined to get this one right.
"There's obviously a danger inherent in doing a spinoff," Gilligan said, "but I just love the character of Saul Goodman so much, and part of me doesn't want to say no to this world."
"Worst case scenario, it’s like the spinoff to 'M*A*S*H,' 'AfterMASH,' that nobody remembers -- and I don’t think it hurt 'M*A*S*H' any that it existed," Gilligan told Empire. "I don’t think we’re going to have that problem, though. Anything based around the character of Saul Goodman and any show starring the wonderful Bob Odenkirk has more than an even chance of being quite good indeed."
