A building under construction in midtown Manhattan partially collapsed on Friday morning, leaving one person dead and another trapped in debris, according to city fire officials.
The Fire Department of New York said Friday afternoon that the trapped person had been rescued and transported to Bellevue Hospital. The person is in serious but stable condition.
The collapse occurred on West 38th Street, just a few blocks from the Empire State Building. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told The Associated Press that 17 workers escaped the collapse.
Fortuna Realty Group, the company developing the property, declined to comment. According to their website, a luxury boutique hotel is being built there.
