Spanish bullfighter Marco Galan took a horn to the scrotum during a bullfight last weekend in Madrid.
Galan's left testicle was "eviscerated" by the bull, which also dragged Galan and tossed him in the air, according to news reports.
"My testicle was ripped open," Galan told a publication called The Local, speaking from his hospital room. "It wasn’t a great moment for me."
Bad for Galan, but worse for the bull -- which went on to be killed -- Humane Society International spokeswoman Wendy Higgins said in a statement.
"It’s really important that we maintain a sense of perspective, and whilst acknowledging that one man losing a testicle is a bad injury, those who taunt and injure and kill bulls for fun do so at their own risk," Higgins said. "They have a choice whether or not to enter the bullring, the bulls do not. Bullfighting has no place in the twenty first century and should be banned.”
While Spain's parliament passed a law that makes outlawing bullfighting difficult, some surmise that this sport may still be on its way out, due to a combination of economic and cultural pressures.
Galan, for his part, says he's not done with bullfighting.
"These things happen when you go in the ring. But bad things can also happen just walking down the street," he said to The Local. "I am making a good recovery and I will back in the ring again soon."
