Can music help with depression?

Have you ever heard of Music Therapy? Music Therapy is an evidence based therapeutic approach that uses music to help individuals recover from physical, mental, emotional, and social struggles. Study, after study, after study shows that wholesome music can help ease anxiety, restore speech, relieve pain, and reduce side effects from surgery. Music has even been shown to help people who struggle with depression.

But this isn’t really news. Most of us know this from experience: We listen to upbeat music to match our mood or get just jazzed or excited about something. We listen to melancholy music if we’re sad, thoughtful, or heartbroken. Good music has a positive effect on us. Music can lift our spirits and help us make sense of life.

One of my favorite musicians is Paul Cardall, an award-winning pianist. In 2009, Paul—already an accomplished musician—received a heart transplant and went on to become a three-time No. 1 Billboard pianist. Paul has dedicated his life to creating music that heals and helps others access spiritual feelings. Judging by the response he’s received, his music has helped countless individuals heal—myself included.
