There's so much pressure around the holidays. Christmas ornaments arrive now before Halloween. The thought of "Bah Humbug" at the first site of mistletoe may be on your mind.
So what's a single person to do when Thanksgiving rolls around?
I have an excerise that can help minimize the holiday blues, put a smile on your face, and allow you to be open to meeting someone before the strike of midnight on New Year's Eve, if you are ready and willing.
- Write down a list of the 5 things you are grateful for. Think about all of the new people that have come into your life in the last year. Take a moment and thank them for their support and friendship.
- Think about those you have neglected, rejected, or simply lost touch with during the course of the year. Contact them and wish them a Happy Thanksgiving.
- Volunteer your time for those more in need. Serve Thanksgiving meals at a soup kitchen, attend a "Toys for Tots" event and make a difference in the life of a child, donate clothing or canned food for the homeless.
You may be asking, what does this have to do with dating and kissing under the mistletoe? A lot. The more you give, the better you feel. Every opportunity to contribute may result in meeting someone else who is giving. You will expand your social network, your business network, and may even start filling up your date card.
Does my exercise work? You bet it does. Frowns turn into smiles, you become open to the possibilities, and people gravitate towards those who are happy and have a positive outlook on life.
So, if you are single at Thanksgiving, look at the beginning of the holiday season with hope and joy. Start smiling, giving, and participating. Accept every invitation for holiday mixers and networking events. Chances are you won't be alone by the end of the calendar year.
