In 2002, Candace Bushnell's life was red-hot. The "Sex and the City" author's HBO series of the same name was in full swing, and so was her love life: That year, Bushnell, then 43, married 33-year-old New York City ballet dancer Charles Askegard -- seven-and-a-half weeks after meeting him. As she told Oprah at the time, "It was certainly something that I wasn't expecting. I always thought that there was a really good chance that I wasn't going to get married."
It seems that Bushnell wasn't the only one who thought she might not get married: Her "Sex and the City" fans may not have expected it, either. In her 2002 interview with Oprah, the author remembered hearing as much from one such fan. "Some woman said, 'How could you abandon us to get married?'" Bushnell recalled. "I said, 'Well, it might be time to move on.'"
So, what has Candace Bushnell moved on to since then (aside from "The Carrie Diaries")?
In this clip from an episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" Bushnell reveals that her marriage, though happy, did not last. "In 2011, we decided to divorce," she says. "I was really busy and traveling a lot, and he was really busy and traveling a lot. We just grew apart."
Today, Bushnell remains single and happy. "I'm really enjoying being single," she says in the clip. "I'm not even looking to meet anybody, which is so freeing."
Now, the single woman everyone would call a "city girl" lives in a house in the country, complete with two dogs and a horse. Bushnell has taken up horseback riding in addition to writing more books, and says that her perspective on urban living has completely changed. "Now, when I got to the city, I think, 'Oh, my god, it's so loud! How do people live here every day?'"
