As the last-place Knicks continued their downward spiral on Sunday in a loss to the Pelicans, friction between teammates Carmelo Anthony and Iman Shumpert appeared to take place on the bench during a timeout in the third quarter.
After a foul was called on Shumpert away from the ball while Ryan Anderson sunk a three-pointer, the 23-year-old and Anthony could be seen arguing on the bench during a break. Shumpter remained on the bench for the entire fourth quarter.
Despite the Pelicans losing Anthony Davis in the first quarter to a broken hand, they were still able to hand the Knicks their ninth straight loss.
Shumpert, whose name has been thrown around in trade rumors this season, called the argument with Anthony a "miscommunication" after the game.
"Of course I wanted to play," Shumpert said, per the New York Post. "Tim was making shots. J.R. [Smith] had it rolling. We were just trying to get a win."
Anthony said he did not have a disagreement with Shumpert, as reported by Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com. Amid the longest Knicks losing streak since 2006, Anthony seemed to be out of answers on how to pull his team out of the slump.
"I don't know what we have to do as far as coming together as a group. I don't know if we've got to sit here for hours and talk and get it all out, but we've got to do something," Anthony said, via ESPNNewYork.com. "Any time you're fighting an uphill battle, you feel like you're in a dark place. But we can't go to that place. I've never been to that place. I don't plan on getting to that place."
