Thursday at 12:30 p.m., hundreds of Carol City High students walked out in support of their former classmate Trayvon Martin, who attended the school as a freshman and sophomore, reports CBS Miami.
Martin, 17, was shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman in Sanford, Florida, on February 26. Zimmerman is claiming self defense for killing the unarmed teen and has not been arrested.
Carol City students marched Thursday and chanted “No justice. No peace and justice for Trayvon,” according to the Miami Herald.
"We decided to do this earlier, around 11, because, you know, we want justice for Trayvon. We were in the cafeteria, and everybody was talking about walking out of school after first lunch," one student told Local10.
The march was organized on Facebook, reports NBC Miami, and although school officials approved an on-campus demonstration, they did not give the students permission to leave school grounds.
The students walked for blocks with Miami Gardens Police escorts and wound up at Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Complex. Miami-Dade Schools spokesman John Schuster told CBS Miami that buses were sent to bring the kids back to school.
Schuster told NBC Miami that Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, had called Carol City's principal and told him to tell the kids not to do "this sort of thing."
