Casey Shakes Convention Attendees From Torpor With "Four More Months" Line

Sitting up in the nosebleed seats at the Democratic National Convention, one was struck by how utterly distracted the audience was for large stretches of Tuesday night's program. Of course the night ended well, with a boisterous address from Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer and the roof-blowing finale from Sen. Hillary Clinton, though the crowd's attention was first engaged when Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. bent the familiar "four more years" line into "four more months," approximately (but not quite) the amount of time left in President Bush's final term.

The phrase shook the crowd from its collective torpor almost immediately. While other speakers tried to berate the crowd into chanting along with their would-be slogans, Casey's meme took off organically, with the speaker wanting to move on before the crowd did. And after Casey left the stage, the crowd attempted to take up the chant anew -- only to be pre-empted by the convention house band.

Presumably, someone running this show will allow convention attendees to chant it a few more times tomorrow.
