Celebrities Are Not Attractive

Celebrities are not attractive. Did that get your attention?

Do I mean that as people -- inside -- they are not good people? Absolutely not. I don't really know enough of them to say whether they're attractive people on the inside.

I must tell you that having spent the majority of my adult life in New York City and Los Angeles, though, that I have a different view of celebrities than a lot of other people.

I see celebrities like Haley Joel Osment, that cute little kid who saw dead people in The Sixth Sense, every day. I see them walking around. I see them running errands.

I actually saw one, Natascha McElhone, today in my spinning class. In case you don't know who she is, she is the TV wife of Californication star David Duchovny.

She walked into spin class five minutes late. As she walked in, I thought "Who is that woman? She looks familiar." All of a sudden, my wife looks at me and says, "That's the wife of the guy from Californication."

She truly was an normal-looking woman. You wouldn't even notice her if she wasn't a celebrity. She blended right into the class.

This is what I want all of you to realize, because so many of us -- but women especially -- compare ourselves to the people we see in magazines and the people we see on television and in the movies. They don't look how they look in the magazines.

In person, you probably look better than they do. Most of them are very average. Anyone can look fantastic with the right makeup artist and a set designer putting beautiful things behind them.

When I was younger and living in New York City, we used to go to "model parties" all the time. When we'd arrive at these parties, we'd always say, "Where are all the models?" Someone would always point out a group of women in the room and say, "They're right over there." All I ever saw were a bunch of tall, average-looking women.

Just because someone looks good in photos doesn't mean they look good in person. A lot of celebrities don't look that good in person. They're average looking people who happen to have a talent for what they do.

So many people, though, compare themselves to these people. So many people feel insecure about their looks based on what they see in magazines. This is especially true with women.

Women spend so much time looking at these magazines and comparing themselves to the celebrities they see in them. They will say to themselves, "If I can just lose five pounds, I'll look better" or "If I can just fix that part of myself, I'll look better."

People are constantly getting plastic surgery, Botox, and laser hair removal to look more like how they think these celebrities look. They are doing these things in the pursuit of perfection. Perfection doesn't exist.

What's wrong with the way you look right now? The answer is: nothing. You look fantastic the way you are right now.

Do you want to lose some pounds? Go work out. If you want to change your hairstyle, do that. Never compare yourself to anyone else, though, especially to celebrities.

The people you see in magazines don't look like that in person. Come to Los Angeles and hang out with me for a day. We'll pretend we're paparazzi and go celebrity hunting, and you'll see this is true.

If you did this, you'd see celebrities how I see them every day. Most of them you'll pass and you won't even blink an eyelash, because they're just average.

A lot of them aren't even that good-looking. They just have great people working with them who make them look great.

Anyone can look great with a personal trainer, a personal make-up artist and a personal chef. Anyone can look great on television. It's all about make-up and good camera angles.

So start embracing yourself. Start embracing who you are. Start looking at all the amazing things about you.

If you're a woman, what are your best features? Are your eyes beautiful? Are your lips great? If you're a guy, what are your strong points?

Whatever your most positive attributes are, start emphasizing them. Start only dressing in clothes that emphasize your best features.

Also, stop comparing yourself to anybody else. You're never going to be them, or anyone else, except you. So start celebrating who you are.
