Celebrities took to social media on Thursday to share their sadness over the news of actor Alan Rickman's death at 69 years old.

Rickman had been battling cancer, a spokesperson for London-based Independent Talent Group confirmed to The Huffington Post.

Known to many as the actor who played Professor Snape in the "Harry Potter" films, Rickman's career spanned many decades. He made notable appearances in films like 1988's "Die Hard," "Love Actually," "Truly, Madly, Deeply" and "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" while maintaining a highly revered stage career.
