While we all heard the bells, Daenerys Targaryen ignored them until ding, dong the wicked Cersei was dead ― and fans could not believe the show killed the character most passionate about her children during an episode that aired on Mother’s Day.

Daenerys breathed fire on King’s Landing until the surrender bells rang out. But she ignored them and kept on blazing. The hellfire rained down and left King’s Landing crumbling on both Cersei’s army and the city full of innocents.

As Cersei watched her city fall, Jaime swept in to attempt to run away with her. In running to find a secret passage out of the Red Keep, the siblings and lovers found themselves trapped. They ultimately met their end when the Red Keep collapsed and buried them, wrapped in one another’s arms, in rubble.

While poetic in some ways and underwhelming in many others, the move to kill Cersei ― who was pregnant with her fourth child ― in an episode that aired on Mother’s Day in the United States is also quite savage. Cersei’s rage at the world has been fueled by the deaths of her three children, Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen, and there is a certain je ne sais quoi about taking out a character who is quite literally the mother of evil on such a day.

Here’s what fans on Twitter had to say about it:
