Charles Joly, The Aviary Beverage Director, Named America's Best Bartender

Chicago Mixologist Named America's Best Bartender

A Chicago mixologist left this weekend's Tales of the Cocktail conference in New Orleans with a new title under his belt: "Best American Bartender."

Charles Joly, beverage director at The Aviary, received the honor Saturday at the event Chicagoist's Anthony Todd described as "the cocktail world's Oscars, TED and Super Bowl wrapped into one, giant booze conference."

Joly, who was formerly the chief mixologist at the Drawing Room and came on board at the Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas-helmed resto last June, was the only Chicagoan who came away from the conference a winner, though other local finalists included Sable Kitchen & Bar for best high volume cocktail bar, the Chicago Tribune notes.

The Aviary's beverage program was also honored with a James Beard Foundation Award in May.
