Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) was re-elected to Congress in New York's 13th Congressional district on Tuesday.

Rangel, who began serving in Congress in 1971, defeated Working Families Party candidate Kenneth Schaeffer and Green party candidate Daniel Vila Rivera to hold on to his seat.

Rangel fended off a strong challenge in the Democratic primary from state Sen. Adriano Espaillat, who also narrowly lost to Rangel in 2012 after the district was redrawn to include more Hispanic voters.

Rangel has saidthat this will be his final term in Congress.
