Chavonne Brown Killed: 31-Year-Old Mother, 5-Year-Old Son Found Fatally Shot In Chicago Home

Police: Suspect In Murder Of Mother, 5-Year-Old Son Shot On West Side

Updated story

A man suspected in the deaths of a 31-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son, who were found fatally shot inside their home on Chicago's South Side early Friday, was found shot on the West Side just a matter of hours later.

Chavonne Brown and her son Sterling Sims were found dead by police after they were called to the home in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue around 2:39 a.m., DNAinfo Chicago reports.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the 18-year-old, the sole suspect in the double murder, is in critical condition after being shot multiple times in the 2800 block of West Arthington Street around 9:10 p.m. Friday in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The suspect remained at Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition early Saturday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Police had been called to the scene of the shooting deaths Friday by Brown's 11-year-old son, who was still inside the home when police arrived, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The 11-year-old was not hurt, but according to relatives, he witnessed the shooting and was only saved from harm because the gunman's gun jammed, CBS Chicago reports. Police, who have not released many details about the shooting, have not confirmed that claim.

Sterling had just graduated from preschool this month, family members added. His godfather, Tyrone Otis, described him as "the best little boy," the Tribune reports.

Relatives told WLS that Brown was a dedicated mother who "loved her kids. Anytime you’d see her she was with her kids."

A police investigation into the shootings is ongoing as of Saturday morning.
