22 Hurt After Chelsea Elevator Drops 3 Floors In Bed, Bath & Beyond Building

An elevator in Chelsea plunged four floors this morning, injuring 22 people, according to ABC News.

The accident occurred at 620 6th Ave. between 18th and 19th streets in a building that houses a Bed, Bath & Beyond, and a TJ Maxx, NBC News reports.

Paul Giampiccolo, 47, an electrician from New Jersey who was on the elevator but wasn't hurt. told DNAinfo "We held onto the walls and each other, we braced ourselves," adding, "We knew there was a bottom, but we didn't know how far it was."

The New York Times reports that 22 of the men had “whiplash-like injuries” and were taken to hospitals. Nine men sustained injuries listed as 'serious' but not life threatening.

The Buildings Deapartment does not yet know what caused the elevator to fall but an investigation is underway, CBS New York reports.

Back in April, 28 people were stuck inside a Washington Heights elevator for an hour and the whole incident was caught on tape.
