Chicago already has two Major League baseball teams, two iconic fast-food dishes and has experienced two mayoral administrations named Daley, so why not a second NFL team too?
The suggestion came from former mayor Richard M. Daley in a clip from a recent interview with Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
"Why is it New York has two [teams], Florida has three," Daley told CSN's David Kaplan. "San Francisco has two. Chicago loves sports, we could get a second team in here."
The idea of Chicago being home to a second NFL team is not without historical precedent. The Chicago Cardinals called the city home until 1959, when the team was relocated to St. Louis on the heels of nine losing seasons over 10 years.
Daley's vision also includes a new stadium for Chicago, one larger than the Bears' Soldier Field, that would be funded privately with "some" public help, according to NBC Chicago. Such a stadium would open the door to the city being able to host higher-profile events such as -- perhaps -- the Super Bowl.
When Rahm Emanuel, Daley's successor, floated the idea of a Windy City NFL Championship to Roger Goodell, the league commissioner noted that Soldier Field has a slightly lower capacity than the minimum size required for venues hosting the big game.
