It may be small consolation amid the summer uptick in homicides -- including six people killed over the most recent weekend -- but a new analysis shows Chicago police are solving more murders in 2013 compared to the same time last year.
Analyizing police data ranging from Jan. 1 and July 18, DNAinfo Chicago reports homicide detectives have solved 50 of the 214 murders committed during that time frame. Clearance of cold-case murders was also up, with detectives solving 71 murders from previous years.
During the same period in 2012, police had only solved 93 murders.
Detectives have reportedly retooled their strategy following the January news of the department's abysmal 2012 murder clearance rate; last year, police solved just 25 percent of the city's murders, the lowest in 21 years.
A slight decline in homicides and shootings for the year have also helped save face for the CPD, the crime-fighting strategies of which have been under fire amid continuing gun violence in the city.
Less than two weeks earlier, the CPD also announced a revamped strategy for community policing that includes crime tips reporting via Twitter and text messaging.
