A man fatally shot by Chicago police while apparently stabbing his estranged wife was the lone fatality in a weekend that left 17 others wounded by gunfire around the city.
Cops say the stabbing victim called police around 10 pm. Sunday to report her estranged husband was violating an order of protection, and following her around. DNAinfo Chicago reports police responded to her Gage Park home in the 5200 block of South Mozart shortly before the man -- who had been hiding outside the house -- attacked her near the home's back door with what cops described as a "foot-long butcher knife."
“At that point, he saw the police coming at him, and stood up and charged the police with the knife, and at that point he was shot and killed,” a police spokesman said. “This is, without a doubt, a classic example of Chicago Police serving and protecting. They wind up saving the woman’s life.”
The Tribune reports the woman's brother and an unknown number of children were in the home at the time.
The 27-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead on the scene while the woman was taken to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The man reportedly had a felony conviction on his record, according to CBS Chicago.
Seventeen other people were injured in non-police-related shootings around the city since Friday, including a 15-year-old boy wounded in a drive-by shooting in West Pullman neighborhood just before midnight Sunday. The Sun-Times reports shootings happened on the South and West Sides, and police say they have several suspects in custody.
