Sunday marked the arrival of the 43rd annual Chicago Pride Parade, an affair which attracted a record number of attendees.
City officials estimate that 850,000 people turned out to the city's Lakeview neighborhood for the parade, which included the expected mix of politicians and corporations, crowd favorites like the Dykes on Bikes and local PFLAG chapters as well as a coalition of religious groups among its 200 contingents.
The interfaith coalition, the Chicago Tribune reports, included a small group of Mormons along with Catholics, Buddhists and a number of other faith groups.
The parade's new route -- stepping off at noon from the intersection of Montrose and Broadway -- made for less overcrowding like what was seen at last year's parade in Chicago. No arrests were reported during the parade, although an altercation broke out near Belmont and Clark early Sunday, many hours after the official festivities ended, NBC Chicago reports.
Elected officials participating in the parade included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County States' Attorney Anita Alvarez. A number of other state, county and city-level officials also were spotted throughout the parade, according to the Windy City Times.
