It was a violent holiday weekend in Chicago, where at least six people were killed and 28 people injured Friday evening through Monday night.
A dispute between neighbors ended with the death of a 21-year-old man Friday afternoon. The Chicago Tribune reports that Gregory Luellen, 39, of the 1400 block of South St. Louis Avenue, got into a fight with his neighbor "apparently over remarks made about Luellen's family." Luellen allegedly pulled out a handgun and threatened the man, who then fled in a van with two acquaintances. When Luellen allegedly opened fired on the van, he struck the driver instead of the neighbor he was aiming for. David Cardine, of Lombard, was pronounced dead on the scene and Luellen later turned himself in to police.
Later Friday, two men were shot in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Javone Oliphant, 22, was shot multiple times and died from his injuries. His friend, a 23-year-old man, was shot in the buttocks and both legs and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was treated and released.
About 5:30 a.m. Saturday, 25-year-old Charles Bell was fatally shot while sitting in a vehicle in the 8500 block of South Givins Court in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood, according to CBS Chicago. The violence continued when, about 9 a.m., 22-year-old Jose Moldonado got into an argument with the driver of a van in near South Karlov Avenue and West 30th Street. The driver got out of the vehicle and reportedly shot Moldonado in the head. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
On Sunday morning, 19-year-old Ricardo Hall was shot in the chest near 64th Street and Wolcott Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, according to the Tribune.
On Monday night, 17-year-old Martel Field was shot in the 200 block of West 107th Place--just around the corner from his home in the Roseland neighborhood. He was found dead on the street, and further details were not available.
A slew of other shootings and at least two stabbings left 28 others injured citywide. Despite the rash of violence in Chicago neighborhoods, downtown was relatively quiet over the weekend. Mayor Rahm Emanuel thanked the police department for helping to make the Taste of Chicago the calmest it has been in years.
"I commend the City’s public safety agencies and employees for their efforts to make this year’s event the safest in recent memory,” Emanuel said Tuesday.
