A woman aboard an Air France flight from Istanbul to Paris was caught with a child in her carry-on bag on Monday, according to reports.

Planet.fr said the child was between 1 and 2, but AFP reports that the little girl was 4 years old.

The news agency said the woman was in the process of adopting the child.

“She was apparently in the transit zone in Istanbul, and had crossed the customs checkpoint with the child, when she was prevented from boarding a flight with her,” AFP quoted an unnamed source as saying.

So the woman hid the girl in her bag and bought a new ticket -- this time for a different flight, Air France Flight 1891.

“Once on board, she placed the child at her feet, under a blanket, but the girl needed to go to the toilet and was noticed by other passengers,” the source told AFP.

A passenger who saw the bag moving told Planet.fr that he was "very shocked" by the incident.

"People turned and talked among themselves," he was quoted as saying. "Nobody could believe it."

Le Figaro said the girl is in "satisfactory" condition.

"An investigation is under way," a spokesperson for Air France told the International Business Times. "I can only say that the security checks are the responsibility of airports, in this case, Istanbul Ataturk."

AFP said the plane landed in Paris, where the woman was taken into custody, but prosecutors declined to file charges.
