Child Cheats Death Thanks To Neighbors' Box Spring

You Won't Believe How This Child Cheated Death

A 3-year-old boy in Burbank, Calif., is alive thanks to two quick-thinking neighbors and their trusty box spring mattress.

Konrad and Jennifer Lightner were moving out of their apartment Sunday afternoon when they noticed the toddler and his sister throwing toys through a window.

The mischief became dangerous when the Lightners saw the boy dangle his leg over the window sill of the third-story apartment. At that moment the Lightners were carrying their box spring to the moving van.

"We called 911 and Konrad threw the box spring down trying to break his fall and stood there to catch him," Jennifer told KABC-TV.

The child, whose name has not been released, tumbled from the window and got briefly snagged by some phone lines.

Amazingly, Lightner actually caught the child. He was able to lower the child to the mattress below while his wife offered play-by-play to the 911 dispatchers, MyBurbank.com reports.

By the time the first responders arrived, the 3-year-old was safe in the arms of his parents, who had been at home, but missed the drama while trying to handle other kids.

They ran outside as soon as they realized what had happened, according to LA Weekly.

Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services officials were called to check out the situation, but the police do not suspect the child's parents did anything wrong, the paper reports.

Their names have not been released to the media.

Emergency workers took the child to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries, UPI.com reports.
