China's state TV has captured harrowing footage of a 65-year-old woman being rescued by divers after a cruise ship carrying hundreds of passengers capsized in the Yangtze River on Monday.
Over 400 people are still unaccounted for in the disaster, and a massive search effort of over 50 ships and 3,000 people is looking for more survivors.
In the footage, a team of divers emerges from the murky waters supporting the disaster victim as onlookers cheer and gasp. Rescue workers standing on the hull of the overturned ship then take hold of the shaken senior as she is brought to safety. China's state-run CCTV said that two other passengers were also saved following the woman in the video.
The captain and chief engineer of the cruise ship survived the sinking and are currently in police custody. They told China's Xinhua news agency that the ship quickly sank after being caught in a cyclone, and the national weather bureau has confirmed that there was a tornado in their area.
The Shanghai travel agency that booked the cruise has yet to release a full passenger list of those on board, which has caused anger among distraught relatives who are demanding the government take action. Many of the passengers are believed to be elderly Chinese tourists, who were one a two-week cruise between the cities of Nanjing and Chongqing.
