Chinese Artist Liu Bolin Disappears Into Kenny Scharf Bowery Mural

Artist Disappears Into Kenny Scharf's Iconic Mural

Artist Liu Bolin is known for his series "Hiding In the City" in which he photographs himself painted to blend into his surroundings. So far, the images in the series have taken place in China and Italy, but now Bolin has come to New York.

WoosterCollective, which is "dedicated to showcasing and celebrating ephemeral art placed on streets in cities around the world," had a wine filled December evening with Bolin's gallerist Eli Klein where they discussed bringing Bolin to New York City to do a series. One of the ideas they tossed out for consideration was having Bolin camouflage himself in Kenny Scharf's Bowery Mural.

Six months later, Bolin was flown into New York City and painted into the mural by his assistants as well as by Kenny Scharf himself. The final photos won't be released for a couple of months but there's a preview below.

Bolin's next piece brought him to Wall Street, where he blended into an iconic stature. Read about it here.
