Chirlane McCray, wife of New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, opened up to HuffPost Live about her husband's bid for mayor, and her marriage to a man years after she came out as a lesbian.
In 1979, McCray wrote a piece in Essence magazine titled "I am a lesbian," detailing her experience coming out as a gay black woman.

Since The Observer dug up the seven-page essay in December, McCray's history has become one of the more interesting stories surrounding the New York City mayor's race.
She talked to HuffPost Live about her sexuality and what she had hoped the Essence article would accomplish for the black feminist movement.
