Chris Evans & Jeremy Renner Face Backlash After Calling Black Widow A 'Slut' In Interview (UPDATE)

Chris Evans Apologizes For Calling Black Widow A 'Whore'

UPDATE: Chris Evans released a statement to The Huffington Post apologizing for the comments he and Jeremy Renner made about Scarlett Johansson's "Avengers" character Black Widow. He said:

Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.

Renner also made a statement to EW and said, "I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”

EARLIER: Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner became the Internet's least favorite Avengers when they called Scarlett Johansson’s character Black Widow a "slut" and a "whore" in a video interview with Digital Spy.

When asked about fans' unmet hopes that Black Widow would get together with their characters, Captain America and Hawkeye respectively, instead of the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Renner said, "She's a slut." Evans laughed and agreed: "I was going to say something along that line ... A complete whore." Renner also joked that "she has a prosthetic leg anyway."

The offhanded comments are not great looks for the "Avengers" extensive press tour, which also made headlines when Robert Downey Jr. walked out of an interview because a reporter asked him about his "dark period." Or maybe, this is all part of Marvel's plan to get you into theaters ...
