Chris Hansen, the NBC News correspondent known as the host of the "To Catch A Predator" series, is leaving the network.

TV Guide reported the news on Friday. "Chris has been a valued member of the team and we thank him for his many contributions to Dateline and NBC News over the last 20 years," a spokesperson told the magazine in a statement. "We wish him the very best."

Meanwhile, Hansen said in a statement that he will be pursuing "hosting and executive producing projects that will be announced in the coming months."

Hansen's greatest claim to fame has been "To Catch A Predator," a series which saw "Dateline" carrying out hidden camera sting operations on potential sex predators. Hansen confronted men who believed they were going to have sex with minors. As TV Guide noted, the series was later canceled despite its popularity, after one of the men killed himself and companies grew nervous about advertising during the controversial show.

Recent weeks have not been smooth sailing for Hansen. Last month, his alleged former mistress Kristyn Caddell revealed details of their affair in an open letter to the National Enquirer. The tabloid wrote about their affair in 2011, and reported that Hansen texted and emailed explicit photos of himself to Caddell.
