Chris Hemsworth Is Unrecognizable After 'In The Heart Of The Sea' Weight Loss

Thor no more.

Chris Hemsworth was cast as the Norse god Thor for a reason. His biceps are the size of basketballs and his abs are the envy of Asgardians and Earthlings everywhere.

For his latest film,"In the Heart of the Sea," however, Hemsworth pulled a Renée Zellweger in "Bridget Jones," flipped it and reversed it and dropped almost all of that famous Marvel muscle.

"Just tried a new diet/training program called 'Lost At Sea.' Wouldn't recommend it..#IntheHeartoftheSea," the Australian actor captioned a photo of his dramatic weight loss over the weekend.

"In the Heart of the Sea" tells the story of the disastrous sea voyage that inspired the Herman Melville classic Moby Dick. Hemsworth plays a 19th century sailor, who gets on the wrong side of a gigantic sperm whale, and ultimately resorts to cannibalism to keep his crew alive. Given how he looks in his Instagram photo, that sounds about right.

Hemsworth and his co-stars went on a pretty extreme diet to lend the film a sense of authenticity.

"We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5, 6, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks," Hemsworth told ET during a set visit. "It's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery. I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment."

People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" circa 2014 still has a couple "Thor" movies left on his docket, so we expect he'll get back in touch with his inner and outer hunk in no time.

Until then, watch this deleted scene from "Avengers: Age of Ultron," featuring Hemsworth in all his shirtless superhero glory.
