Matthews On Beck: 'What In Hell Is This Man Talking About?'

He said that the right's arguments about Egypt have "more to do with scaring this country than with getting to the truth of what's happening there."

Matthews then moved on to Beck. He played a clip of Beck talking about his new pet theory: that an Islamic caliphate could spread across the Middle East due to the Egyptian uprising. One of the points Beck made was that both Presidents Bush had avoided bombing what used to be known as "ancient Babylon" when they invaded Iraq, seemingly because it was intended to be the center of the new caliphate.

Matthews was dumbfounded.

"I have rarely heard anything like this on television in my life," he said. "Don't hit ancient Babylon because that's going to be the center of evil...what in hell is this man talking about?"

His guests, the Washington Post's Gene Robinson and Media Matters' Eric Boehlert, were equally incredulous, with Robinson calling him a "jerk" for, in his view, abusing his position as a television and radio host.
