Chris Pratt wants you to know he’s sorry.
The “Guardians of the Galaxy” star issued a heartfelt apology on Thursday over a video promoting the sequel to the Marvel superhero smash where he joked about closed captioning.
“I made a video recently with subtitles, and requested that people turn up the volume and not just ‘read the subtitles’ it was so people wouldn’t scroll past the video on mute, thus watching and digesting the information in the video,” he wrote in a lengthy Instagram caption. “HOWEVER, I realize now doing so was incredibly insensitive to the many folks out there who depend on subtitles. More than 38 million Americans live with some sort of hearing disability. So I want to apologize.”
In the accompanying video, Pratt, who’s currently at work on the sequel to “Jurassic World,” uses American Sign Language to apologize those who were offended by the video.
The original video, which Marvel reportedly shared on their Facebook channel, featured Pratt promoting “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and has since been deleted.
“C’mon seriously dude,” Pratt says in the video, according to The Mighty. “You’d rather read those than hear me?”
Then the captions apparently disappeared, as Pratt adds, “Nah. No reading those.”
The actor says that the backlash to the video struck a chord with him and made sure to mention that his apology comes from the heart and not at the behest of some publicist.
“I have people in my life who are hearing-impaired, and the last thing in the world I would want to do is offend them or anybody who suffers from hearing loss or any other disability,” he wrote. “So truly from the bottom of my heart I apologize. Thanks for pointing this out to me. In the future I’ll try to be a little less ignorant about it.”
He ended the note with a plea to Instagram to include an option for closed captioning to benefit all those who are hard of hearing.
