Christina Aguilera On Making Sure Her Kids 'Feel Safe And Loved'

She also encourages fellow moms to make time for themselves.

In an honest look at her role as a parent, Christina Aguilera has opened up about her experience with domestic violence and the importance of providing a safe space for her kids.

On Nov. 12, the singer attended an event for HopeLine, Verizon's organization dedicated to preventing domestic violence. Aguilera, who has a 15-month-old daughter with fiance Matthew Rutler and a 7-year-old son with ex-husband Jordan Bratman, told AOL at the event that her support for HopeLine stems from her personal experience with domestic violence and "dealing with the aftermath of what can happen." She elaborated for Today and said that the experience influenced an important decision years ago.

"I made a decision very young that I would never put myself in a situation where I would feel helpless to a man and that I would be able to make money for myself and my future children so they wouldn't have to suffer at the hands of abuse," she said. "Now, I'm a mother of a 7-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter and it's very important to me to provide them with an environment to feel safe and loved."

The mother of two also had some advice for fellow moms and stressed the importance of making time for a "creative release or pampering release." The Grammy winner prefers yoga.

"We all have breaking points and it's hard sometimes to find patience and to find the energy when we're exhausted," she told Today.

Aguilera isn't one to shy away from her experience with motherhood and pregnancy. In 2012, she told People that "the experience of being pregnant and having a child and seeing what a woman's body can do is amazing."
