Days before the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage around the United States last week, Newman Congregational Church in Rumford, Rhode Island, installed a set of rainbow doors along its fence to send a strong message in support of equality.
The message, "God's doors are open to all," stands in contrast to many houses of worship that still argue they have a religious objection to same-sex marriage.
Before being installed along the church's fence, the doors stood within the sanctuary, directly in front of the pulpit:
Members of the church first displayed the doors at Providence's Pride parade June 20. They will likely remain up for the first week of July, said church moderator Tom Mottur.
The doors' message fits well with an overarching motto of the UCC, Mottur said, which states: "Whoever you are, where ever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here!"
The United Church of Christ, the denomination to which Newman Congregational Church belongs, voted to openly support marriage equality in 2005. It's in good company with many other denominations, houses of worship and individual pastors that have also embraced same-sex marriage.
Despite the change in law, discriminatory views of same-sex couples remain widespread. Newman's rainbow doors are one powerful step toward shifting people's attitudes and reminding the world that love is love.
