One mom is making the best out of a bad situation, and showing her boys how to do the same.

When the government shutdown eliminated Cindy Shafer's job at the airport, she had to find a way to provide for her family, WANE15 reports.

So she began grooming the pets of friends and family. She cuts her own golden doodle's hair on a table in their garage, and she decided to extend the service to other pups in the neighborhood.

Even though it's not technically a business, she and her two young sons get to spend time grooming dogs together, while making a little extra money on the side.

"The grooming brings everyone together here and helps us because we are getting a little bit more," her son Jacob told WANE15.

Shafer turned the furlough into a teachable moment, proving to her boys that even negative circumstances can bring positive results.

"It's okay and you know we'll make it work," she told them.

A D.C. restaurant offered free burgers for a week after the shutdown began, and other businesses are offering similar deals like free coffee for furloughed workers that are strapped for cash.
